Garden plant turning pale

Question
Pale
Pale
Hi Dr. Vann,

The attached pic is from my garden--sorry I don't know the name of this plant that produces red flowers. The right side of the plant in the pic started turning pale a few months ago. It used to have--the leaves--the same intense green color you see in the left part of the pic. What might be causing this? What should I do about it? Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Rick

Answer
Rick:

This plant looks much like an Ixora.  The pale leaves can often be the result of a nutritional issue rather than a disease.  Best to consider getting a soil test conducted from this area.  You can contact your local county Agricultural Extension office for instructions.  This test is usually free also.  The results will tell you how to correct the imbalances.  Also, take a closer look at the stems of some of the yellowing plants.  Look for any evidence of chewing or other evidences of damage/injury to the stems- just in case it is something rather than soil related.  Usually, a good grade od tree/shrub fertilizer should be appropriate.  Visit your local garden center/nursery for fertilizer recommendations.

Nice plant.  We had these in our landscape when we lived in Ft Myers.  They don't have many pest problems.  Unfortunately, they don't do too well during our winters here in Arkansas!

Regards
Steve
