Broom plant and Butterfly bush

Question
I have a really beautiful Broom plant that bloomed in May 2010, and through the summer was very pretty and has grown considerably.  Should I cut it back now so it will bloom in the Spring again?  If so where would I cut it.

Also exactly when (Spring or Fall) should I cut down(trim) my Butterfly bushes.
Thank you

Answer
Hi Regina,
Thanx for your question. In regard to the broom, prune off only the dead or dying branches and prune these back to the main branch.  You can do some minor shaping but don't prune too severely.

The butterfly bush may be cut down to 5 or 6 inches above the ground any time between now and first frost.  I hope this helps.
Tom
