Japanese Lilac Tree


Question
My tree is about five years old.It has alot of bare branches.The flowers are beautiful and fragrant.It does not get full like it was inthe nursery.Do I cut it back or leave it alone?I love the tree and do not want to loose it.We have very sandy soil but,it still flowers.HELP!We are in Wiscosin.

Hi Chris,
Thanx for your question.  Your tree must have suffered some kind of damage.  I don't think it was cold damage because the tree is hardy to Zone 3.  Wind is one of the principal causes of damage.  I would cut back the parts that are dead because it should have leafed out by now.  Give it a side dressing of well-composted manure in the spring after the last frost and then in mid-summer.   It may take it a few years to flower like it has in the past and there can be years where the tree doesn't flower as much as it does in other years.  I hope this helps.
