Fungus on Japanese Maple

Question
I have an orange gooey fungus about 2-3 in. from the ground that completely encircles the trunk. The fungus is a band about 2 inches wide. This is a young tree that was planted in April and is about 5 ft. in height. What can I do to treat this?

Answer
It does not sound like anything that is harmful to maple, Sounds like a decay fungus that is growing on the mulch or organic matter around the tree. See if the fungus is attached to the tree. IF it is a disease that harms the tree it will be growing out of the trunk and not be easily pulled off. If it comes up easily and not attached it is a fungus that is decaying the organic matter and not a problem to the tree.
