Diseased lilac tree

Question
We have a white lilac tree which is over twenty years old.  During that time it very rarely has flowers and over the last five years the leaves look as though they have been burnt.  There are flower buds but most are brown and damaged.  The tree has never had full blossom!  Please can you tell us what the problem is and hopefully advise a remedy?  (uk)

Answer
Ann:
Take a close look at the main trunk and the area near the base of the tree for any evidence of loose or damaged areas of bark.  The symptoms that you describe can be caused by numerous things including root stress.  This stress can be lack of or too much water in the soil.  Difficult to tell w/o seeing the tree.  You may consider visiting with a local garden center/nursery where trees are sold and describe the symptoms to them.  Some businesses may even make a house call to actually see the tree.

Steve
