calalillies

Question
I've planted calaa lilies for years...this year I changed the planting spot and only two bloomed out of twenty...
What went wrong....the leaves are beautiful.

Answer
Hi Darlene,
Thanx for your question.  It might depend upon when you transplanted the rhizomes.  If they were already sprouting, this can cause them to be shocked and reduce blooming while the green growth continues.  Did you separate the rhizomes so they weren't over crowded?  Callas need direct sunlight for at least part of the day but in very hot climates they need protection from the afternoon sun.  Also, a feeding of a good bulb food higher in potassium and phosphorus as opposed to nitrogen helps blooming.  Don't use fertilizers high in nitrogen and make sure your lawn fertilizers don't leach over into the garden.  If the leaves are nice and healthy but you have no blooms it may just mean you need to add some bone meal or other bloom food.  I hope this helps.
Tom
