Sarracenia need dormancy in tropical weather?

Question
I found this website very useful in information. but one more thing i want to know aabout Sarracenia, butterwort and other carnivorous plants from america.. do they need dormancy here in Thailand? temperature here about 89-100 F during summer and 59-82 F during winter. here isn't cold at all. on raining season is raining alot. i heard that if i don't put sarra for dormancy, about 2 years it will die.. is it true? i also heard an idea about put it in fridge. but i plan to make a mini bog garden for my sarra.. i don't think it'd be easy to fit in fridge.

thank you very much for great informations
Jop

Answer
Hi Tanakrit,

We have friends that live on Hawaii's Big Island that have grown many of the North American carnivorous plants.  Sarracenia will actually do fine.  They seem to put themselves into a brief dormancy for about two months in December and January under tropical conditions.  Venus flytraps require a cold dormancy, as do temperate butterworts and sundews.  They would need a period in cold storage.  The Sarracenia do not.  Mexican butterworts would do fine in Thailand since they are sub-tropical.  Here's a good article on temperate cp in the tropics:  http://www.greenculturesg.com/articles/oct06/oct06_cpdormancy.htm

Good Growing!
