Bark damage to Red Blaze Maple Tree

Question
QUESTION: We have a Red Blaze Maple tree approx. 5 years now, still appears to be doing great, but last year appeared as if deer were rubbing the antlers on the side of the tree, scratches galore, with bark off etc. On one side only, we took off the rest of the damaged bark, next day, deer did the other side.  Cleaned off the areas, sprayed for bugs etc., wrapped the tree during the winter.  Took off the wrapping a few weeks, sprayed for bugs, even thou haven't seen any bugs.  Today I noticed the other side of the tree trunk had bark that was away from the tree, peeled it off, sprayed again for insects.  Now what do I do to it?? Will get some Bayer advanced tree & scrub insectide for it, do I need to wrap it again come this fall or what?  I haven't seen any insects on it, the leaves are gorgeous has already grown alot, don't want to lose it, help.

ANSWER: Sandra:
Loss of bark may indicate a wound followed by the initation of decay, a slow, yet progressive decline.  If you would lkie, send me a photo of this area and I may have a better idea of what the situation is.  Wrapping a damaged area may not be advisable, since it will provide a "safe" area for insect to hide and do damage.

QUESTION: Thank you for your response, but my digital isn't working, can't take any photos at this time, when my son comes in from Denver will use his camera & send photos.  He lives out of town, may be here in approx a week or so.

Regards,

Sandra

Answer
Sandra:
That is fine. You can send a photo when you have access to a camera. Be sure to reference your original questions.

It would be helpful to be sure of the animal pest.  There may be some repellents out there or even putting up a hardware cloth enclosure around the trunk up to 4-5 feet or whatever may be good to try. This works great for beavers.  Keep in mind, some permanent damage may have already been done.
