removal of euonymus coloratus

Question
How do I get rid of this vine so that i can plant grass?  Will something kill it or do I have to pull it all by hand?

Answer
Hi Anne,
Thanx for your question.  How much of it do you have?  If you just have a manageable amount, spot treat with Roundup or dig it up.  I recommend Roundup myself.  It biodegrades quickly and I know it is not popular amongst some folks but, I use it safely and I'm happy with it.  Wear gloves and try not to get any on your skin because it is a rather deadly chemical.  If you have a whole yardful of this stuff, I would consult a professional landscaper or, you might try plowing it all under yourself as some folks would do when ripping out a yard and starting a lawn all over.  If you have a large area of lawn covered by this invasive species, you can probably use a broad-leaf weed killer such as are used in spreaders for lawns that will kill dandelion and other types of broadleaf plants.  I hope this helps.

Hi Anne,
I should have added that there are some plants, thistle is one that comes to mind, that may take several treatments of Roundup before it is eracicated.  I had to use Roundup on several applications to rid myself of Autumn Glory clematis, honeysuckle and bindweed.  So, you may have to use Round up 2, 3 even 4 times to get the full result.  Some of these plants have incredible root systems that can survive a lot of trauma.

I hope this helps.
Tom
