Trimming

Question
When is the best time for trimming bushes?
I have evergreen bush, some type of 'yew' I'd like to trim it down so it doesn't grow to tall.
I live in Southern Illinois.
I also have 'Emerald 'n Gold Euonymus',  its new growth has begun and i was wondering if it's too late to trim it down?
Can I use the garden scissors for trimming?  What are the do's and don'ts when trimming?  I am so novice on the gardening. I will appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Answer
Kiyeon,
It is fine to trim any evergreen shrub or tree that gets too bushy and out of shape at any time of year except really hot midsummer, the cut tips will turn brown if it's too hot, like say between 90 and 100 degrees. You may not get those hot temps in Illinois, but we do experience some of that in Kentucky. Now is a good time to trim or you can wait til mid spring after the new growth is considerably noticeable.
The Euonymous is a very rapidly growing groundcover or small, low growing shrub. It is best to train it so that the growing branches are spreading on the ground. You may want to use some metal garden staples to anchor some of the longest branches onto the ground so that they will root and spread as a groundcover, then trim the rest.If you want to grow them a s shrubs, they will have to be trimmed often in a growing season.
Yes, you can use garden scissors or any type of pruner you have. The evergreens are best trimmed with an electric or gas powered trimmer, but if you don't have one, just use garden shears.
Hope this is helpful info for you.Enjoy the spring weather!
