Roundup contamination

Question
Help! I asked my gardener to dig up a patch of lawn so I could plant some vegetables. Before I could say anything, he had sprayed the grass with roundup to kill the grass.
How long will I need to wait before using that plot of ground for an organic garden? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Roundup is relatively short lived. Even if there are some residual chemicals left in the soil after the weed killer has evaporated, these chemicals will have been leeched away after one or two good rainfalls or deep waterings. I would think in three weeks you could till in some manure and other nutrients. For information on organic soil building visit our website:  http://www.avant-gardening.com
