Orchid bitten by dog. Help!

Question
Hi Mr King. I'm 11 and my dog has just pulled out my mum's
"Plush Eye 'Red Canyon' " Orchid from the pot only 20 minutes ago. I don't know what to do now. I've re-potted it and put orchid bark and this seaweed thing to keep it moist but it looks like it's already dying. Is there anyway I could keep it alive? Some of the roots of the orchid have been chewed off but I put them in with the pot again. Please Help. I need your advice quickly.

Answer
I assume that this is a Miltonia orchid (It makes a huge difference what type of orchd it is).  They have thin, floppy leaves.  I also assume that you repotted it in fresh orchid potting mix. You didn't describe the "dying" symptoms.  I'll assume the leaves appear limp. When you say that you put the roots that have been chewed off back in the orchid mix, I assume that these roots are still part of the plant. Do not put any roots that have been chewed off from the plant back in the pot as these will just rot and make matters worse. I assume there are still some undamaged roots on the plant.

Miltonia orchids like an "open" potting mix consisting of fir bark, perlite, charcoal, etc that allows air to pass readily through the mix.  They also like to be kept quite moist and have a lot of humidity.  It is highly unusual, however, for any orchid to look like they're dying after only 20 minutes out of the pot.

If my guesses are correct, especially about the type of orchid, then you may be able to revive it. I have just one further suggestion and that is to put a plastic bag over the pot and plant for a few days to increase the humidity about the plant.  It may be slow process for the plant to regain its strength.  It will need to grow new roots and new leaves.  This will not happen over night.  It will take several weeks for new growth to appear.  However, with high humidity, some of the old leaves might start to perk up in days.

Let me know Tram if any further information comes to light or if you have any further questions.
