Orchid needs help

Question
I inherited a phalaenopsis after the flowers died. They are still on the stalk. She had the plant about 3 months.
The roots appear shriveled.  One of the 6 leaves is turning yellow the others are dark green.
Question: do I cut the stalk? Where do I cut it? Should I only mist the plant in the hopes that the roots will strengthen -- Do you think it was over watered.  What temperature can this plant thrive in?  Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Janet, your phalaenopsis needs to be repotted in fresh orchid potting mix. Be sure the pot you use has lots of drainage holes.  When unpotting, check the roots for any that are mushy or stringy.  These should be removed before repotting. Good roots are firm and turn green when wet. Also, soak the new orchid potting mix for a couple of hours prior to use.  These plants should be repotted after each flowering.

Cut the old flower spike off just above the second or third node (ie joint).

If can grow the plant in an east window, they like the morning sunlight.  Water thoroughly once per week. Best time to water is first thing in the morning to allow the plant to dry off before nightfall.
