Orchid repotting

Question
Does one go up a pot size when re-potting?  My orchids finished flowering about a month ago. They have now three new leaves on each plant. Quite a few nodes appearing on each stem. Just read I should have re-potted. Is it too late now and if I do should I go up a size to accommodate the roots?  Thank you for any information!

Answer
First Barbara, it sounds like you have phalaenopsis orchids.  Since this type of orchid is constanty growing, it may be repotted anytime. As to pot size, that will depend upon root condition.  If most or all of the plant roots are in good condition (ie firm and turn green when wet), you probably will need to increase the pot diameter by an inch or so.  Part of the reason for this is that once you unpot your plants, roots are likely to spread out more.  When you repot these roots, slowly rotate the root mass as you lower it into the new pot. This should allow them to follow the inside curvature of the new pot and reduce root damage. Be sure the roots are wet when you repot these plants and this will make them more flexible and less brittle.
