My orchid was doing so well then it flopped.

Question
My orchid was doing well.  I watered it regularly and switched it to a self watering pot.  It had buds that were ready to bloom then the next day they were dried up and falling off.  I don't understand why and what I am doing wrong when it was doing so well.  I even gave it orchid food once a month.  I believe that my orchid is a phalyenopsis but I could be wrong.  It also sits in front of my kitchen window.  Could the direct sunlight be too much?  Could you please help me?  Thank you!

Answer
If you changed its environment while it was in bud, that could have led to bud drop. They like the morning sun but I'm not so sure about a self watering pot.  They like to become almost dry between waterings. It sounds as if you actually repotted the plant in switching to the self watering pot.  You need to check the roots if you have not done that.  Remove the plant from its pot and, if any roots are "mushy", they need to be removed before repotting in an orchid potting mix.  Good roots are firm and turn green when watered.  I would return to the conditions and pot you were using when you were doing so well. Experimenting with new conditions can be fun if you have enough orchids to be able to lose a few along the way.  Another reason for bud drop is if the plant gets too close to a window during a cold period.
