Phaleanopsis Orchid

Question
Hi Guys,

I have an three Phaleanopsis Orchid, there is one in particular that I am worried about, the plant itself is not the problem it is really healthy has nice leaves including 4 new recent additions and is also has a new flower spike. The problem is that I have noticed light green vine-like moss growing on the inside of the pot. As far as I can see at the moment it isn't keeping the plant to moist or causing too many problems but I am wondering if this is a normal occurrence or should I re-pot the orchid?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Jade, the moss growing in the pot isn't a problem but could suggest that you have a very moist environment in the pot.  Usually, this is because the potting mix has broken down and retains too much moisture. Your plant's condition suggests that this is not yet a problem so, as the saying goes, don't fix what isn't broken.  Eventually, this could cause root rot.  That would be evidenced by one or more lower leaves turning yellow. As a rule of thumb, it has been recommended that phalaenopsis orchids be repotted every one to two years. When repotting, use a standard fir bark based orchid potting mix.  This should be strained to remove all dust-like particles.  Soak the new potting mix for a hour before use since dry fir bark repels water and this repellency can be reduced by the soaking. Type of pot also plays a role since clay is porous and the potting mix can dry out more quickly than plastic.
