palanopsis Orchid division

Question
I had a white palanopsis beautiful orchid for years. It had a 5 - 6 leaves and good roots growth. plant was very healthy and every year it gives me nice blooms also. last week i wanted to divide it so i cut the top part with all the leaves with two roots and repot it. the bottom part remain with the all pot without any leaves with all the roots. does the bottom part will give me a new plant.

Answer
Hello Hemali,

I hope the top part you removed and potted continues to grow well.  But, I want to warn you that with only two roots it may begin to decline a little until it grows additional new roots.  By decline, I mean the leaves may become a little limp over the next few months.  I don't mean to alarm you, only to tell you what to expect.

As for the bottom part without leaves and only roots, if you are lucky it may produce a keiki or baby plantlet from the side of the old stump that is left.  You will have to be patient as, if it were to happen, it may be several months or longer before it does this.  If you do not see a new plantlet emerge within 6 months, I suggest getting rid of it.

Hope this helped.  Good luck.
