phalaenopsis casualty

Question
Hi Wayne -
I was given a phal as a gift and the directions from the store were to water from the bottom for about a half-hour once a week.  The plant had one open flower and 4-5 buds.  All but two opened and they lasted several weeks.  After the blooms started dropping, the leaves started going by black-spot one by one.
Long question short, if all leaves are gone is there any way to resurrect this plant from the roots or do I own yet another orchid casualty?  I did take it from the pot and removed any soggy roots.
Thank you for any assistance!
Terri

Answer
Terri, your question as I understand it, is whether a phalaenopsis orchid can survive once it has lost all of its leaves.  Where the roots join the leaves (or former leaves) there is a growing point.  If that point has been destroyed there is no chance to resurrect the plant. Roots can be in perfect condition but if these is no meristemmatic tissue to form new leves, there will be no new growth.  It is not always easy to determine whether the growing point has been destroyed, so lift the plant in its pot so that growing point is just above the potting mix and be patient.  If, after a month has passed, there is no new growth then I would toss the plant.
