help on cattleya

Question
The pseudobulbs of the cattleya are shriveled. Does this mean they are dehydrated or are they overwatered. Aside from this problem, the plant looks healthy and there are 4 new eyes that I've recently noticed.
I grow the orchid in the office and I get afternoon sun. I spray or mist the orchid plant daily and water it once a week.
Please help!

Answer
Alma, Cattleya species generally grow in areas that get little or no rain during part of the year.  During this time, the pseudobilbs do shrink some.  During this perid of dormancy it is best to cut back on the watering and rely pretty much on misting until the eyes break and new growth starts.  Then, watering weekly along with feeding helps that growth.  Afternoon sun is good.  You may want to consider repotting the plant as new growth starts-- especially if the plant hasn't been repotted for a couple of years. If you decide to repot, be sure to anchor the pseudobulbs securely in the pot with rhizome clips and/or bamboo stakes. Use a fairly coarse orchid potting mix containg fir bar, charcoal, tree fern, perlite, and other orchid growing ingredients.
