Suggestion for a houseplant

Question
Hi, I had to throw away a 5-ft ivy topiary...had it about 5 years, but it just got too "tired looking''. It was also alot of work keeping it bug-free. I have a huge window with western exposure (lots of afternoon sun) and would like a recommendation of a great houseplant...that would be unusual as well. I have eucalytis growing in the room, orchids and a rubber plant, but want a plant to take the place of the 5 foot ivy topiary. I live in Chicago. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your consideration,
Elizabeth

Answer
Hi Elizabeth
I am sorry it took so long to answer this-my husband has been down with pneumonia and I have been away from the computer.
Anyway, I am sorry to hear about the topiary-I have one, no where near 5 ft. tall but I do love it.  They are usually a small leaved plant called "Creeping Fig" aka "Ficus pumila".
Have you thought of maybe a type of a succulent or cactus?  A really nice one is a "Euphorbia trigona".  It will get to be about 4' tall.  They get a type of a 'flower' at the top.  I think that would be unusual and look great with the different plants you have now, plus do well in the exposure you have.  My dad has one that is about 4' tall and he lives in Evanston.  He has had it for several years and it is doing great.  You should be able to find one at your local Home Depot or Lowes.
Good Luck Elizabeth and again, I am sorry for the delay.
Leslie
