cleaning leaves on house plant

Question
I have a Schefflera plant and it's leaves are sticky and they drip onto our hardwood floor. Not real bad. Just enough to stop my dust mop. Any idea what this is and how I can get rid of it. Any magic sprays out there?

Answer
Hi!
I am sorry for the delay in answering your question.  My husband has been down with pneumonia and I have been away from my computer.
Have you checked your Schefflera for a pest called 'scale'?  You will see it along the stem and on the underside of the leaves.  They are hard/waxy brown or tan in color, roundish and about 1/16 to 1/4 inch in size.  They feed off of the plant sap, they do not fly around or move, they are stationery when they dig into the stem.
When the plant is infested, they can leave a sticky mess on the plant, floor and furniture nearby.  This is called "honeydew".
If this is the problem, which I believe it may be, there are a couple of things you can try.  First of all, isolate the plant so your other plants do not become infested.
If there are not a lot of scale, you can try removing them with a tweezers.
I like mixing a spray of rubbing alcohol (about 1 or 2 tsps) and dish soap (again, 1 or 2 tsps) in a spray bottle and spraying down the plant.  You can also purchase a houseplant insect spray and try that.
If the plant is heavily infested, you are better off just tossing it away and starting with a new one.
Good luck and again, I am sorry for the delay.
Leslie
