Plant Type

Question
I have a plant that I don't know the name of. To me its a tree, but the plant part isn't stable enough to be a tree. I have to support it with rods and string. The leaves are big and green with white on them. Once another leaf sprouts out, usually a lower one will die off. The plant is over 5yrs old and stands about 6 -7 feet tall.  But recently, something else has sprouted out of it. I've never seen this before, it looks kind of like a thin corn on the cob. So now its of interest to me to find out what kind of plant this is and what is this sprouting from it. Could you please help me with what type of plant this is? If you need anymore descriptions, please email me, thanks.

Answer
Jan,

I think you have a dumbcane or dieffenbachia. Take a look at pictures at this site:

Or go to google and put in dumbcane then click on images and see if that is it.  Let me know if I am right. If that is what it is I suspect the corn on the cob is a flower stalk. The flowers will not be large but they will smell wonderful especially in the evening. If you have more questions write again and do let me know if that is what it is.
