Question

QUESTION: I have a plant that I brought seen it before many times in the store but for the life of me cannot seem to figure out the name. I need the name and some care instructions. I do not have the best track record of taking care of plants so maybe you can help. Thank you!

ANSWER: Hi Stephanie,

Your plant is a type of Palm, but the photo is not clear enough for me to determine which species of Palm you have. A close up that shows the base of the plant from the soil to about 12 inches above the soil will help with the ID. Take the photo in good light so it is not fuzzy.

There are many types of Palm and they have very different types of care. That is why getting a species ID is very important.

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the follow-up photo. Your palm is a Phoenix Roebelinii, sometimes called Date Palm.

This palm requires quite a bit of light so it must be within a couple of feet of your sunniest, completely unshaded window. The roots do not like to be disturbed, so leave it in its existing pot. If you prefer a more attractive planter, just be sure you use one that is big enough for you to set the existing pot inside of.

The Date Palm does not tolerate very dry soil. Allow the top half-inch of soil to dry before watering just enough so that a little water trickles through the drain holes.

Like most Palm species, the Date Palm is prone to spider mite infestations. Spider mites make very fine webs between the leaves. Misting lightly will make the webbing more visible. Treating spider mites on this palm is more difficult than other palms because of the very sharp needles. Always be very careful when handling this plant and keep children away from it.

I have written detailed articles on treating plant pests and on Palm care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected]. I have also written an indoor plant care book in a PDF format that I can sell you if you contact me at my email address.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
