Indoor Planting

Question
Is it true that sleeping with plants in my room will cut off my oxygen supply? Explain

Answer
Hi Eniola,

That is a persistent myth that is based on an incomplete understanding.

Plants produce oxygen during the day and use it at night. However, the amount that they produce over the course of 24 hours is far more than the amount that they use up, so it is a net gain of oxygen.

Even during the hours of darkness the amount of oxygen used by plants is so small that a room crammed full of plants would have no significant impact on the human oxygen supply. In fact, one person in that plant-filled room would use up more oxygen than all of the plants combined!

A final note: Hospitals encourage plants in patient rooms, not just because plants are cheerful, but because they help provide oxygen and clean the air.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
