What can I do to the part of the plant that has no leaves?

Question
I have had a plant for many years (about 10), I don't even know what it is.  It has a heart shape green leaf with lighter colored verigations in it.  It has grown shoots and which are now draping down from it, some are 20' long.  They are growing great but all the leafs from where the shoots come out of the pot to about 2' down the shoot have died and have fallen off, but the shoots keep growing.  The only thing that remains on this section coming out of the pot is the little nub where the leaf was. It just looks real bad but I don't want to kill the plant.  Can I cut these sections off and put the shoot back into the soil?  Is there something I can do to get the leaf to regrow?  I can try to send you a picture of the plant if necessary.

I have a post & beam house and the plant is on the top of a beam, almost under a sky light so it gets lots of light.  It gets well water about every 7 to 10 days and I do fertilize it with miricle grow house plant food every 4 to 6 months.  The soil has not been changed for many years.

Can you help me?

Answer
Jill,

Your plant is a pothos vine. It has lost it's leaves from too much or too little water at times.  I have one that looks the same way. Yes, you can cut off the leafy shoots with about 6 inches of leafless stem. Dip the cut end of the stem in rooting hormone (Rootone) then insert cuttings in a new pot of soil.  Water and care for as normal and the cuttings should be rooted in about a month.

Do not pitch the pot that you took the cuttings from. Just cut all bare stem back to within 1/2 inch of the soil. In 4-6 weeks these should send out a lot of new shoots and be bushier than it ever was. Good luck.
