plant identification help

Question
Hi Will,

I live in New York City and I recently acquired a very small indoor plant. It is about 4 inches high with a single stem (no leaves). at the top of the stem, that resembles a trunk, there is a waxy flat flower that is maroon/purple with green in the center of the leaves/petals. The flower itself is about 2.5 inches in diameter and faces the sky. The plant itself resembles a small tree that has a flower at the top. Can you help me identify it so I will be able to care for it. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Lindsay,

Can you describe the foliage for me? Length, shape, color, and location relative to the stem and flowers?

Better yet, can you e-mail a  photo to me at [email protected]?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Regards,
Will Creed
