Jade Plant - Soil Fungus

Question
I recently discovered I have a yellow mushroom type fungus growing in the soil of my jade plant.  I attempted transplanting with fresh soil to cure it and shook off as much old soil as possible from the roots when transplanting.  To my chagrin the fungus is back.  Is there a remedy I can apply to the soild without damaging the jade.  It is rather large and I have had it for some years.  Thank you for your help.

Answer
HI Gail,

Jades do not like their roots disturbed. I am more concerned about the effects of the soil replacement on your Jade than the fungus.

Soil fungus does not harm plants, so drastic remedies are not recommended. The fungus comes from spores that have entered the soil. The best way to control the fungus is to carefully remove the mushrooms along with a little of the surrounding soil each time you see one. At first it may seem like an endless battle, but gradually you will see a decline in the number of mushrooms and eventually they should disappear altogether.

Allowing the top half of the soil to get very dry will not only deter fungus growth, but is also good for the Jade itself. Often, just proper watering is sufficient to eliminate soil fungus. Also be sure that no liquid food substances (coffee, soda, milk) are added to the soil.

If you want a quicker solution, there are fungicides available that can be applied as soil drenches. They work fairly well, although there is no guarantee. If you do use a fungicide, be sure to read the label carefully and follow all safety precautions.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
