germinating cyclamens

Question
Hi Will
Thanks for the prompt and informative reply to my question.
I'd like to ask further if the seed pod (if that is what it is) will split open on its own, or should I open it before germinating the seeds?
Just by the way, why did you write that I am ambitious? Is it a complicated precedure?

Question -
I have a cyclamen (I think it is cyclamen persicum) tuber that I have been growing for a few years. This year I decided to try collect the seeds, and germinate them at the begining of next winter. can you tell me how I should go about collecting them, and how  I should store them. Also, what conditions are best for germinating them?
Answer -
Hi Steven,

You are very ambitious!

Remove the seed capsule with the stem intact. Keep it in a dry, airy place for 6-8 weeks. It will then be ready for germination.

To germinate them, put it in a damp, sterile, peat-based potting mix and cover the container with plastic to keep the moisture in. Then place the whole thing in a completely dark place for 3-4 weeks. A temperature of 64 degrees is ideal for germination.

After germination, gradually increase the light and remove the plastic cover. Be sure the potting mix doesn't dry out.

Did you know that you can also propagate Cyclamen by dividing the tubers?

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.

Answer
The seed capsule will open on its own. The best time to sow the seeds is right after the capsule has split open. Soak the seeds in warm water and a bit of liquid soap to wash away the outer mucous and soften the seed.

Getting new plants from seeds is a precise and long-term process that many folks do not have the patience for.
