germinating seeds

Question
QUESTION: Hi! Recently i just collected some seeds of of my bush lily (Clivia miniata). I have removed them from the pod and taken out the clear, smooth casing around it. I was just wondering when would be a good time to go ahead and plant the seeds? Also how long will it take for them to germinate and are there any special care requirements for seedlings?

ANSWER: Hi Victor,
Thanx for your question.  Take a plastic tray or pot and fill it with clean, new potting soil.  On top of the potting soil, make a 1/4 inch layer of vermiculite.  Place the seeds on top of the vermiculite and gently press in half way.  You did the right thing by removing the clear casing around the seeds.  Place the pot in a dish and water from the bottom.  Do not water from the top.  Cover the top with clear plastic.  Keep the surrounding area at 75癋.  Germination takes 1-3 weeks.  When the seedlings are 3-4 inches long and have one leaf, it is time to transfer to separate pots.  Fill the pots 3/4 of the way with potting soil and place the seedling on top.  Slightly cover the root and do not flood with water.  Gently mist.  After about a year, you should have three or four leaves.  Flowers will not appear for two to three years.  Do not allow to completely dry out.  Place the pots outdoors after last frost, in full sun.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Thanks for the detailed responce! But would right now be a good time to plant the seeds? Or should i wait a bit longer until spring? Also can i use perlite instead or vermiculite and when should i take off the clear plastic?

Answer
Hi Victor,
Sorry I was not comprehensive enough in my answer to you.  You can start the seeds now if you like.  I think any time, indoors would be fine.  Yes, you can use perlite instead of vermiculite.  Take off the clear plastic once the seeds have germinated and keep moist but not soggy.  I hope this helps.
