Flowering Aloe Vera

Question
My sister has an aloe vera plant that has just lately started sprouting little yellow flowers. She's had it for about five years now and wants to know how rare it is for an aloe vera plant to have flowers. She talked to a local landscaping company and they said they have never heard of it. Is there something wrong or is this normal?

Answer
Hi Tanya,

Your sister is doing a great job in caring for her Aloe vera! It usually takes several years or more of good care for an Aloe vera to flower. Most people never reach that point with their Aloes so it does seem quite rare. However, in nature and in greenhouses, it is quite common.

Tell you sister that she had done a great job and she should share her good work with friends and neighbors. But she should hold off on contacting the media about this event!

BTW, Landscaping companies often do not know much about indoor (tropical) plants.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
