hoya, dropping flowers

Question
We have a large Hoya plant in our office, covering one wall. I has been in the office for at least 10 years, the last 2 times it has tried to bloom, the flower have dropped off before opening. I have tried increasing the water during this time. We usually water only once a week. What can I do? it is such an impresive plant.

Answer
Hi Sharon,

To bloom, Hoyas must have a lot of bright indirect light all day and a few hours of direct light, as well. In addition, keep it potbound and on the dry side and don't change its location. Disturb it as little as possible. Do NOT use a high nitrogen fertilizer and be careful not to over fertilize, especially during the semi-dormant winter period. Overfeeding causes bud drop.

You haven't told me much about your Hoya's environment, including its care, but I suspect either over fertilizing or overwatering are the reason for the buds not opening.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
