Fiddle leaf fig tree pruning

Question
Hi,

I recently purchased a fiddle leaf fig tree that is approx 4 1/2 feet tall.  The bottom 2 1/2 feet of the tree is stalk only with the branches & leaves starting about half way up. Is there anything I can I can do to promote leaf growth on the bottom half of the tree?

Thank you,

Gina

Answer
Gina,

You can prune off a few inches of the growing tip and it may promote new growth but it may not. This plant can grow into a 40 foot tall tree or taller, it is a tree and not a shrub. It is in its nature to drop its lower leaves as it grows larger and forms a trunk. The larger it gets the more leaves it will drop. It will start forming side branches. Because it is a tree and not a shrub there is not a lot you can do for it but pruning the growing tip may create side shoots faster. Good luck.
