urine in Ficus plant

Question
will cat urine kill my 20 year old ficus

Answer
Hi Vicky,

If your cat routinely uses the Ficus soil as a litter box, then eventually the urine will acidify the soil and kill the plant. However, a single episode of urine will not damage the Ficus. So I guess the answer is, "It depends."

If you need to remove a concentration of urine from the soil, I suggest that you take the tree outside and flush lots of clear water through the soil for several minutes. The addition of some horticultural lime will also help counteract the acid content of the urine.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
