mushrooms in soil

Question
Hello Will,
I'm not sure what kind of plant this is, it sits in a fairly good size pot, it sits by a window in a semi darkened room but receives plenty of light from window, it has been about a year since I repotted it.
Today when I got home from work I noticed a fairly bright yellow, very noticeable, I went for a closer inspection and my plant has these yellow mushrooms growing out of soil, these were not visible at last watering which has been approximately five days ago.
I'm wondering what these are and if they will hurt my plant?
I do have a digital camera so if you would like a picture I could send one to you.

Thank you,
Rendel

Answer
Hi Rendel,

Mushrooms are a fungus that are harmless to your plant. The soil that you used was contaminated with mushroom spores. The moderately low light and damp soil have made for a good environment for the mushrooms to grow.

To get rid of them, scrape them out along with nearby loose soil. More will pop up, but just be persistent in scraping them out each time they emerge. Eventually they should disappear. There are also commercial fungicides that are sold and can be applied as soil drenches.

If you e-mail a photo to my address below, I can identify your plant for you and give you some care instructions.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
