Answer
Hi Rose,
Plants will shed their leaves for several reasons. It is normal for plants to drop some of their leaves. It is not normal for plants to suddenly drop leaves in large numbers.
This could be caused by an abrupt change, either in light or temperature, cold water watering, underwatering or overwatering. Check to see if there is any sign of insect presence. Schefflera are especially sensitive to drafts so check to see if the plant is being exposed to a cold draft.
The stunted growth could be caused by lack of fertilizer or underwatering. Either of those could also be a cause of the leaf drop. At this time of year I would recommend you use a very small amount of fertilizer, dilute to about 1/3 of the strength the directions on the container recommend. If you see a difference in the leaf drop and growth after a week then go ahead and give another 1/3. Remember not to water with fertilizer when the soil is dry as this may cause the plant to absorb too much fertilizer too soon, it's best to lightly water then wait a least a couple of hours or until the next day to use the fertilizer.  Schefflera like for the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry between watering.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
