schefflera losing leaves

Question
I just read your response to a fellow confused plant mommy and I am having the same problem. My lovely, huge scheffera has been dropping leaves at an alarming rate. I read what you said about drafts and that is probably the problem. My question is, which is more important, no draft or sunlight? I can move my plant away from the drafty window, but it would not get that much sun anywhere else. ?

Answer
Hi Claire,
No draft and sunlight are both pretty important, however if someone was to twist my arm to choose one above the other then I would say no draft. I would choose no draft because there are more options to solve the sunlight problem.
Move the plant away from the draft and then use artificial lighting to supplement the lower sunlight.
I would recommend you use incandescent plant light bulbs. Be sure you get real plant lights and not a light bulb with just a blue coating on it. These plants commonly have on their package that they make plants LOOK better and healthier, they don't MAKE the plant better and healthier.
With real incandescent plant light bulbs the bulb is made from tinted glass. They are also slightly more expensive but worth it. They produce the light spectrum plants need and they last a lot longer. A plant light that I use and would recommend is Agrosun Dayspot grow bulb, it's made by Hydrofarm. I get them from our local Meijer store in their floral/garden section but you might be able to find them at a local nursery or home& garden store. The set up I have found that works best for larger plants is to put the bulbs in a 3 light floor lamp and aim the lights at the plants.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy & Gracie
