Spider Plant-Verigated

Question
neither have been re-potted. I water them when the top dirt is dry. They were both thriving up until Nov. The one is facing the east, the other the west. Could it be the floor returns are too close.

-----Question-----
I noticed that both of my spider plants are dying - they are turning brown at the roots, and eventually drying up. I also have a problem w/small gnats. I have taken the plant that had these out of the house.

Lori,

Did you recently repot these plants? How often do you water them? Are they in a sunny location? Let me know and I will try to help.

Answer
Lori,

With spider plants the problems are usually not enough sun or too much or too little water.  They love the sun and are happiest if they get as much sun as possible all day. Keep drapes and blinds open all day and the will be happiest.

They can't stand to be ignored too long but they need to dry out well between waterings. The gnats indicate that they have been overwaterd. Overwatering causes root rot like you have noticed. One of the best ways to tell if a plant needs water is to pick it up. If it is light weight it needs watered, if it is heavy it does not. If it drys out more the gnats will go away and the roots will recuperate if they are not too far gone. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
