umbrella plant,

Question
My plants has a sticky substance and anything near it, curtains, windowsill it sits on, and the window itself.
I have notices a small web, is it spider mites and how do I rid the problem?

Answer
Dee,

The sticky stuff is called honeydew, it is excrement from either scale, mealy bugs or aphids (all are insects), probably scale. On the leaves you will find little grey or brown round bumps that can be scraped off with your fingernail or a knife. To get rid of these insects you need to dab at the scale with  q-tips dipped into rubbing alcohol which will kill them on contact.

Or you can spray the entire tree with rubbing alcohol straight from the bottle, making sure you get the fronts and backs of all the leaves. You need to do this twice a week for 6 weeks to make sure you get any eggs that hatch.

Or you can get Neem Oil at most garden centers and spray it with that once a week for 8 weeks, again making sure you get the fronts and backs of all leaves. Neem Oil is organic and safe for pets and safe to use in your home. You might want to spread some old sheets under the tree until you are done with the spraying.

You may also have spider mites but they do not generally create honeydew. If you do have them this treatment should also get rid of them. Good luck.
