majestic palm pest

Question
I have worm or grub type bugs in my palm. They are eating(?) the roots & spreading to my other plants. How do I get rid of them?

Answer
Hi Kathy,

Majesty palms are one of my least favorite plants for several reasons, but you have just added another one.

This plant species has a very poor record as an indoor plant because it does not hold up well. It requires a lot of light, nearly perfect watering, special fertilizing, and it is  magnet for spider mites and other pests. Majesty palm grows very quickly outside and that allows discount reailers to sell this large plant at a low price. The growers of these plants cut corners to keep their costs down and that just makes them even more problematic for those who purchase them.

One of the ways they save money, is to use poor-quality soil and to skip routine anti-pest practices. That is why you are  seeing critters in the soil.

Given the poor record this plant, I would recommend that you use the presence of the pests as a legitimate reason to return the plant for a refund or exchange. If that is not possible, then you can try plunging the pot in a tub of water almost up to its rim and leaving it there for 30-40 minutes. This will probably force the critters up and out of the soil as they look for air.

If that technique doesn't work, then you will have to purchase a systemic pesticide that you mix with water and add to the soil. If you do this, read the label very carefully and be sure to follow all safety precautions.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
