repot Ficus tree ?

Question
fica tree is about 8ft. across, 9 ft. tall. We have kept the tree at this height for several years. Pot is about 18" deep and 22" across at the top. It was last repotted about 5 yrs ago. This tree has been inside in the winter and out during the summer months. Getting harder to get in and out as we get older.  My question is: does this tree need to be repotted?

Answer
Hi Betty,

As long as you can keep the roots properly moist, there is no reason to repot. Sometimes as Ficus trees become more potbound they need to be watered a bit more often, although most times they adjust just fine all on their own. Regular repotting is really unnecessary.

As I am sure you have observed, the greatest amount of new growth occurs in the summer sunlight. In order to avoid evermore new growth and pruning, you might consider leaving your tree indoors year round. The growth rate will slow somewhat, but I don't think that is a problem. The benefit is that you won't have to haul it back and forth twice each year.

I have written articles on Ficus tree care and moving indoor plants outside that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
