Growing mint

Question
QUESTION: I recently purchased a mint plant.. and wanted to know more about propagating the plant. can u please give me some suggestions.. i am a beginner

ANSWER: Nita,
Mint spreads very easily and the usual method of propagation is division. It likes full sun, preferably outdoors in the ground. If that is not possible at least in a pot outdoors and in about 2-3 months you should be able to divide it. In the ground it can become a weed and is frequently harder to contain than it is to propagate. Do not overwater it. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

QUESTION: What is a good container to grow mint ...if i am growing it in a apartment setting..Thanks..Darlene

Answer
Nita,

A plain clay pot no larger than an 8" diameter pot for this year. Do you have a patio or anyplace you can put it outside? You have almost no chance that it will survive indoors all the time. It needs full sun which you cannot achieve indoors, air movement, and a temperature drop of at least 10 degrees at night. For soil in a pot you need to mix potting soil and builders sand 50/50 for good drainage. Water it well when you water it but then do not water it again until it is very dry, not just dry on the surface. You can insert a bamboo skewer into the soil and if it comes out moist do not water. Pinching a piece off for use in tea will cause the plant to branch more and become fuller. Good luck.
