a slow growing rubber plant

i have had this rubber plant for almost 6 months now throughout this time it has grown only one leaf it has got only eight leaves and i water it from the tray once or twicce a week which i have been recommended by a friend.it is in an 5 lt capacity pot.it is by the window but we dont open the curtains so it doesnt get direct sunlight but it is quite near the light source from time to time i give it some liquid plant furtiliser.
is this normal?

Hi Salih,

Your rubber plant is not getting enough light. It does not need protection from direct sun. In fact, some direct sun each day would be good for it. So open up those curtains every day because light is the key determinant of healthy new growth.

You may also be keeping the soil too moist if you are watering twice per week. Water your plant from the top until a bit runs through into the tray. Then wait until the top inch of soil feels dry before watering thoroughly again.

Your plant is growing too slowly to need more nutrients. Stop fertilizing for at least a year. After that, you can resume using it at half-strength as long as the plant is healthy and growing vigorously by then.
