Hi :)
I am wondering if you might be able to guide me... there are two plants that my sister and boyfriend own where the leaves are dropping all at the root, while the bottom leaves are green and growing. It is almost balded at the root. One is a form of Ivy, and the other I believe is a fern type.
I would appreciate your advice.

Hi Gina,

I need better information to be able to help you. A photo of each plant would probably be sufficient. Specifically, I need to know what plant species your have. There are many kinds of ivies and ferns and I need to know which you have.

Leaves do not grow at the roots, which are below the soil surface, so I really do not understand what you are describing.
