Ficus Tree leaves dropping

Question
I have a fiscus tree. I got it from work and moved it home about 2 months ago. I put it in front of the patio doors, it gets light and I water once in a while, someone told me not to overwater. The room temp is around 60. I have not moved it in over a month. What more can I do. Is the room too cold, or too much light. The light comes from the east. I live in Maine. thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Barbara,

Ficus trees are notorious for dropping leaves whenever they are relocated - even from one side of the house to another. The reason for this is that Ficus leaves are very sensitive to even small changes in light.

Fortunately, this leaf drop is nonfatal and not a permanent condition, as long as the tree is still getting enough light.  If your Ficus tree is located right in front of an unobstructed window, then it will gradually recover. The more light it receives, the faster it will recover and the better it will do overall.

The adjustment process after being relocated can last as long as six months, so you do need to be patient. Look for signs of new leaves coming in. They will be adapted to the new location.

Do not stress your Ficus further by repotting or fertilizing or letting it get too dry. It is best to water it when the top half-inch of soil feels dry. 60 degree temps are fine.

I have written an article on Ficus trees that goes into this in even greater detail. I will email it to anyone who sends their request to my email address below.
