fungus?

Question
I work for a childcare center and the mulch we recently purchased has a plant/fungus growing in it that looks like a carrot sticking out of the ground.  It is spongy and hollow and the flies are all over it.  It also has a bad smell.  Can you tell me what this might be and how to get rid of it safely?

Answer
Hi Nan,

Mulch does not belong inside on houseplants for the very reasons that you mentioned. Mulch (and compost) contain lots of fungi, bacteria and often smells and attract insect pests. It works very well outdoors where there are natural controls, but it should not be used indoors.

I suggest that you remove all of the mulch that you added and use it outdoors in your garden. A few insect pests may remain for a few days after you remove the mulch, but they should die off on their own accord within a week.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
