fungus on trees

Question
We have many trees on our property and we live in Oregon where we get lots of rain. I have noticed a pine tree that is loosing branches, they are dying from the bottom up and they have quite a lot of green/gray dried looking fungus on its
branches. What can I use to maybe spray on it to kill the fungus without hurting the tree?

Answer
Normally the lower limbs on trees die and drop off due to shading. This is a normal process. The green/ grey on the branches are lichens and will not harm the tree. In fact environmentalist seem to feel the presence of lichens is a sign that there is little air polution in the area and the stand of trees is healthy. I do not think you have a problem but if this still worries you, I would recommend that you call the Oregon State Forestry Agency and ask one of their Foresters to come out and take a look. This service is free in most States.
