broken palm

Question
We have (had?) a small indoor palm tree. A recent visitor knocked the plant over, and it snapped in half. Is there some way to salvage the plant (either the part still in the soil or the part that broke off?

Answer
Hi Zvi,

If your broken plant is a true palm, then it cannot be saved - either the top or the bottom. Palms cannot be propagated from cuttings. They have only one growing tip and once that is damaged, then the plant will stop growing and slowly die.

However, I know from experience that many people call certain plants, such as Dracaena marginatas, palms when they are not palms. Perhaps that is the case with your plant.

If you can get a proper ID for your plant or post a photo here, then I can tell you if there is a way to salvage your plant.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
