CARE OF YUCCA PLANT

Question
QUESTION: my plant is as shown in photo
given at i59.photobucket.com/.../ g317/JEAE/Botani009.jpg.
my plant leaves are going brown as I have shifted my plant from siliguri to pune. I have put it in water only and it is indoor with no sunlight and I water it every week n then dry it. please---- help.

ANSWER: Vicky,

The link to your picture didn't work but a yucca is a desert plant. It is to be grown in a sandy soil in full sun. It is dying because you are not giving it enough sun and you are giving it too much water. Put it in a pot with cactus soil and a drainage hole and only water it ever 10 days then empty the drain tray an hour later and set it in the sunniest possible window with the window covering open from dawn to dusk and it will come back if it is not already too far gone.
Good luck.

QUESTION: Hi, thanks for ur advice. I am re-attaching the image for confirmation.

Answer
Vicky,

Your plant is not a yucca, it is a corn plant or Dracaena deremensis 'Janet Craig'. This plant also prefers soil but it prefers plain potting soil. If you have or can get extra peat moss to make the soil more acidic that would make it even happier. Mix the peat moss with the soil 50/50.

Also when you fertilize it use Miracid fertilizer. Get it out of the water ASAP. Probably the water in your area has flouride in it and flouride and clorine is deadly to this plant. It is probably what is causing the brown leaves on the plant. When you water your plant your need to allow the water to sit in an open bucket for 24 hours so the flouride and clorine dissipates into the air before you use it to water the plants.

It also does not like any sun. It does need bright light but no direct sun. Below is a website that has more info. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
