Diffenbachia Amoena (Dumb Cane) cutting

Question
Hello,

I have a large tall Diffenbachia that reaches the ceiling.

I would like to cut the stem at the top, so it will not have to bend and eventually fall down.

My questions are:

1. How do I cut it?  is it hard to cut it?  which knife do I need to use?

2. Will it grow back again from where I cut it or from other places?

3. Will it be better to call a gardner to cut it?

Thank you very much,
Gali

Answer
Hi Gail,

Dieffenbachias invariably grow tall and their thick stems are not strong enough to support their very heavy leaves. They usually need supports or else the stems snap. In any case, Dieffenbachias require regular pruning to keep them manageable.

Th stem can be cut back to any height. Keep in mind that new growth will emerge on the stem just below where you make the pruning cut. In general, it is best to cut it back to a height of 1-3 feet so there is lots of space for the new growth to grow upward.

A sturdy pair of scissors, pruners or a sharp knife will all easily cut through a Dieffenbachia stem. Just make a clean cut. WARNING: the sap from Dieffenbachias can irritate the skin and is hazardous to mucous membranes (nose, eyes and mouth). Use gloves when pruning and be sure not to touch your face before washing your hands.

The top stem cutting can be rooted in the base of the plant or in its own separate pot. Remove all but 6-8 inches of bare stem below the lowest leaves before rooting it.

Pruning a Dieffenbachia is a relatively easy process and I am sure you can manage it without professional assistance.

I have written an article on Dieffenbachia care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
