Nephthytis,hedera, pothos

Question
Hi Will,

I don't know much about house plants mainly outside. But I recently got a Pinkish green Nephritis. I also have some hedera and pothos. Is it OK to plant the Nephritis with the hedera? Or would it be better to plant it with the pothos?

What about care and watering of these types of plants. My son has been watering them every day and the leaves were turning yellow, upon looking I saw the plant was soaked to the bottom with a little rot. (pothos) I cleaned it up and replanted in dryer soil added B1 to all of the plants and a little Mirclegro.

What about lighting for these plants, they go in a kitchen window that isn't very light since it has an awing over it.

  Thanks for your help.
Bridget

Answer
Hi Bridget,

The compatibility of plants depends on their moisture and light requirements. Both must match for them to be compatible.

As far as light goes, the Pothos is the mis-match here as it does not do well in direct indoor sunlight. Nephthytis requires lots of direct sunlight to thrive and maintain its colors. Hedera does best with at least a few hours of direct sunlight each day.

As for soil moisture, Nephthytis should be watered as soon as the surface of the soil is dry. Hederas and Pothos need to have the top inch of soil dry before watering.

Based on your light description, you could probably put the Pothos and Hedera together. However, repotting is tricky and not something I recommend. It would be better to put the two plants together in a large but growing in their separate pots. Bear in mind that the Hederas really need more light than teh Pothos.

The only cure for root rot is prevention and proper watering. Replanting is not the answer and vitamins and fertilizes will not help at all and may aggravate the problem. It may take several months for your repotted Pothos to recover, if it does at all. So don't disturb the roots any further until it has fully recovered.

I have written articles on Pothos and Hedera Ivy care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].
